What is ‘Choosing Wisely’?

Launched in 2015, Choosing Wisely Australia seeks to improve the quality of healthcare through starting a conversation about tests and treatments and procedures where evidence shows they provide no benefit or, in some case, lead to harm. Led by Australia’s colleges, societies and associations and facilitated by NPS MedicineWise, Choosing Wisely Australia challenges the way we think about healthcare, questioning the notion 'more is always better'.

Austin Health’s ‘Choosing Wisely Champion Hospital’ project

Austin Health was funded under the 2016-17 Better Care Victoria Innovation Fund to support them to become a Choosing Wisely champion hospital. The Choosing Wisely project at Austin Health took a whole of hospital approach and as a result, impacted care delivery by clinicians and care received by patients across the health service. The project demonstrated statistically significant reductions in the volumes of unnecessary coagulation studies and urine cultures being ordered. Auditing of test indications supported this finding and highlighted that clinicians are ordering in line with clinical recommendations.

What is the Choosing Wisely Scaling Collaboration?

Following its success at Austin Health, the Better Care Victoria Innovation Fund will be supporting the Choosing Wisely Scaling Collaboration in 2017-18. In partnership with NPS MedicineWise and Austin Health, the collaboration will commence in May 2018 and run until May 2019, bringing together up to 11 health services interested in becoming Choosing Wisely champion hospitals.

What are the objectives of the Choosing Wisely Scaling Collaboration?

The primary objectives are to:

  • establish a sustainable framework to measure low value care and impact of interventions designed to reduce low value care practices
  • decrease the proportion of low value care practices delivered in health services by reducing unnecessary requesting of tests, treatments and procedures.
