Better Care Victoria hosted its inaugural Innovation in Action event at the Tennis Centre on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th of March, 2018. Coordinated by the System Improvement, Innovation and Leadership branch (SIIL), the event attracted over 280 delegates from a range of professions and health services including clinicians, researchers, consultants, project officers, managers and executives.
The event provided an opportunity for delegates to learn about the latest in healthcare improvement, innovation and leadership, for the purpose of improving patient outcomes. There were also opportunities for networking on both days and to view the poster exhibits that incorporated presentations from several partner organisations outlining their key lessons and successes in healthcare innovation.
Day one of the event was opened by BCV Board Chair, Dr Douglas Travis, which was followed by a video message from Jill Hennessy who shared her wisdom on the necessity of learning from our successes and failures in moving forward. The opening plenary session of Day One included keynote speaker Susan O’Neill, CEO of Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.
The first day focused on the many facets of innovation in healthcare including barriers, sustainability and key elements of success, and the importance of sharing what we learn in pursuit of effective collaboration across the health system. Highlights of the day included the showcasing of innovation projects and improvement collaboratives, as well as a session on how to successfully scale innovation in healthcare across the system. We also premiered our two new videos, ‘Think sepsis. Act fast.’ Sepsis Scaling Collaboration and Choosing Wisely Scaling Collaboration, which are projects both being scaled in Victoria.
Day two of the event kicked off with BCV Board Member and Chairperson of BCV’s Consumer Advisory Committee, Kellie O’Callaghan, sharing her personal experience with the Victorian healthcare system and highlighting the need to place consumers at the heart of health innovation by, “allowing everyone a seat at the table”.
“Wisdom derived from personal experience is no less valuable than clinical experience”. (Kellie O’Callaghan)
There was an impressive line-up of speakers and presentations with a focus on leadership, capability, and learning from failure. Keynote guest speaker, Rachael Robertson, shared her experiences on building high performing teams and the lessons she learned from living in the Antarctic with a small team of people. She captivated the audience with her wisdom on integrity, leadership and respect.
Several health service professionals, innovation advisors, and our very own industry coaches delivered their presentations throughout the day keeping in the theme of day two. A highlight was a session delivered on the concept of ‘failure’ and how we can use these experiences to improve and innovate.
The closing session was a thought-provoking panel discussion including Mr Matiu Bush, Ms Kellie O’Callaghan, Dr Douglas Travis, and Professor Danny Samson who answered questions from the audience on the key themes for day two, including leadership and engaging consumers in the design and implementation of innovation in healthcare.
The BCV team would like to thank MC, Adam Spencer, for doing a marvellous job and the presenters and delegates who made the event a success. We look forward to finding further opportunities to connect and share the learnings from these sessions across the state to provide outstanding care for all Victorians.
